The initial results of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine trials conducted by Moderna in the United States have shown positive outcomes.
In these trials, participants' bodies produced antibodies similar to those found in individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 after receiving the vaccine. If future tests also yield positive results, the COVID-19 vaccine will soon be readily available to the global population.
Undoubtedly, this is the best news the world has been waiting for.
Distribution of the COVID-19 Vaccine
While the vaccine tests in a laboratory setting have shown promising results, it remains unclear whether the vaccine will effectively protect people from COVID-19 in real-world conditions.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has prepared and equipped Moderna’s facilities for Phase 2 trials, which will involve testing the vaccine on several hundred participants on a larger scale. In Phase 3, the vaccine will be tested on several thousand participants. Before the emergence of COVID-19, vaccine trials for developers were not as prolonged, and larger-scale tests were conducted earlier. However, the current situation is different as COVID-19 affects thousands globally each day and causes significant mortality. Thus, additional caution is necessary.
Side Effects of the COVID-19 Vaccine
According to reports from Moderna researchers, the vaccine has no serious or long-lasting side effects. In trial cases, some participants experienced mild redness and pain at the injection site, which resolved quickly.
Moderna has previously conducted research and developed vaccines for other types of coronaviruses. As this is the first human trial for this type of virus, scientists are hopeful that all phases of testing will be successful, leading to the eradication of COVID-19 globally.
