Loratadine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural histamine in the body. Histamine can cause symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Loratadine is used to treat these symptoms, as well as itching and redness caused by hives, skin rashes, cold symptoms, or allergies. It also provides temporary relief for hay fever symptoms (allergies to pollen and dust in the air). The use of tablets or capsules in children under 6 years, and syrups or chewable tablets in children under 2 years, is not recommended unless prescribed by a doctor.

Do not use Loratadine if you are allergic to it or to Desloratadine (Clarinex). Some chewable forms of Loratadine may contain phenylalanine, which can be harmful to people with phenylketonuria (a hereditary disorder requiring a specific diet to prevent intellectual disability). Always consult your doctor before use.

Precautions Before Taking This Medication

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before taking this medication:

Loratadine is unlikely to harm an unborn baby, but you should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

How Should You Take Loratadine?

  • Take Loratadine exactly as directed on the label or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than recommended. Overdosing on Loratadine may cause drowsiness.
  • Loratadine is usually taken once daily, with or without food.
  • Chewable tablets should be chewed before swallowing, while regular tablets should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.
  • Measure liquid Loratadine using a syringe, dropper, or special measuring spoon for accuracy.
  • If allergy symptoms do not improve after three days of use, or if treating hives takes longer than six weeks, consult a doctor.
  • Store this medication at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light.

What If You Miss a Dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

What Happens If You Overdose?

Symptoms of an overdose may include headache, drowsiness, or a fast heartbeat. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.

What Are the Side Effects of Loratadine?

Common side effects of Loratadine may include headache, fatigue, drowsiness, stomach pain, vomiting, dry mouth, or feeling nervous or hyperactive. Seek emergency medical help if you experience an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing. Stop taking Loratadine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe headache
  • Extreme weakness
  • Rashes
  • Itching
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Wheezing
